8 reasons why the traditional education system is broken
The digital education initiative is alive and well and part of the reason why there is such a demand for digital education is the idea that traditional education has a number of shortcomings that are making it less accessible for those that are most in need of upskilling and educational programs that will help them further their career. Ed Tech will only continue to build its popularity and the major reason for this is because the educational system is in its current state, broken. Here are some of the top reasons why the traditional education system simply isn’t working anymore and why the system is strongly considered to be broken:
There are a rash of school closings: one of the biggest problems is that many public schools and educational facilities are finding themselves stuck in major budget cuts. First they are forced to cut a number of different programs and extracurricular activities and then they are eventually forced to close entirely. Communities, parents and students are all feeling targeted by various budget cuts and a number of different underutilize public schools have been forced to shut their doors as a result of major educational funding across the United States. As a result of these closing schools it’s difficult for some students to get access to quality education through overpopulation and many parents are even forced to homeschool their kids. Districts are not considering other neighborhood uses for public school buildings in order to keep them open and as more schools start to shut their doors and face cuts, this is putting the educational system in crisis and so the earliest stages of children’s education. Introducing digital initiatives can help to cut the cost of education through paperless study. Extra resources that can be used in the home can also improve the way that kids are able to learn in a homeschooling environment.
Parental involvement is at an all-time low: there are many new tools available to teachers for connecting to parents, tutors and other educational professionals. The time that’s spent in the classroom really isn’t enough for teachers to explain complex concepts to many of their students and as a result time spent at home with parents and tutors through review is necessary. The problem however is that many schools struggle to get parents involved and to give parents the tools that they need to teach students higher-level education concepts. Through the increasing conductivity of the workplace and the competitive nature of many modern careers, parents are only becoming more dependent on schools to provide their kids with the concepts they need for advancement. There’s far less chance for parents to sit down with their kids at home and spend time actually reviewing content after day of school. With the right digital platforms however that are accessible to both parents and students as well as communication tools between parents, tutors and students, it is possible to start seeing a difference in this parental connection with public schooling.
Technology in schools can have its downside: introducing technology into schools and into the classroom can have some amazing educational opportunities but in many cases it is made the jobs for teachers a little more difficult by way of distraction. The idea of moving the entire experience to an online setting could not only be cheaper but could make the process of setting up lessons, making sure students have access to tools and more much easier. Placing more emphasis on technology they can be access from home or any location rather than simply technology that can be placed into schools can have a rewarding upside instead of a distracting downside.
Education hasn’t innovated in hundreds of years: even though technology is changing in the world is changing teachers and education as a whole is moving at a snail’s pace. Curriculum standards are changing lightly bite the policy and practice for many classroom environments throughout the world from kindergarten up until grade 12 still follows much of the same mentality. Teachers are receiving much of the same training that they had decades ago and with digital programs it could be possible for students to be learning from the highest trained teachers, with access to new distance-learning technology and with changes made to suit the digital age of education. Unless teachers are able to adapt and skill up beyond the requirements that they need to get hired, it’s very difficult to see a shift in education coming anytime soon.
Students are ready for post secondary: although 80% of students in the United States graduate from high school less than half of high school seniors are able to read in a proficient manner for college study or complete complex math problems required for advanced post secondary education. This means that many high school seniors are entering into postsecondary education hitting a brick wall that they’re forced to crawl up in order to advance in their studies. Students continue to be passed when they should be held back in order to keep up with their classmates. With the 40% average of graduating seniors being poorly equipped for college or even going into the workplace, this represents a massive failure on the part of the current education system. Having access to learning resources and a standardized digital program that’s available at all times could help to make sure that students would always have the ability to go back and review their work and complete modules that would segue into postsecondary education when and if they decided to take the path to college or university.
Our high school system was designed for a workforce that several generations old: The digital workforce has created a dramatic shift in the requirements for students and the types of skills that are needed to be effective in many different positions. In many high school systems students are learning items that were designed to meet the needs of the early 20th century workforce. A large number of students aren’t even preparing for the workforce at all but rather to attend a college or university program. Even many entry-level positions of high school will require at least a few months of extensive training before someone can become highly effective as an employee. High school programs are not preparing people with this training and as a result many corporations have had to step up and create their own bridging or training programs for new employees as they come out of college or university or for new employees as they come out of high school. Bolstering their current skills and ensuring that students have the required proficiency to be effective in the workplace is falling moreso on the students themselves as well as the companies that hire them.
Postsecondary education remains expensive: many students are very interested in the idea of gaining the skills that they may want in order to secure a better position in their employment. A major barrier to entry for students is the inflexibility of postsecondary institutions as well as the extensive expenses that are associated with upskilling. Education in a post secondary world remains very much a business for colleges and universities and while they do need the money to maintain their facilities, opting for a digital initiative could help to bring the cost of education down worldwide, solve problems with student loans as well as make education more accessible to those that are interested in acquiring skills for their career.
Diversity is a problem in the education system: TAG programs for example will immediately labeled talented and gifted students early on in their education. Recognizing learning talent and building a gifted model with diversity is equally as important. Understanding student bodies and making sure that all students have access to the learning resources and tools they need for success should remain a big part of an educators focus. Labeling like this early on is working to create gender gaps as well as diversity gaps within education. As a result education is focusing on nationwide push is to encourage women for example into engineering, math, technology and more. If these students at a young age were able to access these types of programs, they may have had a better chance at advancing their knowledge and feeling more comfortable in the future of their career development. Diversity in education is important as diversity in the workplace is equally as important. If students are placed on a track early on and unable to access the resources that they need to follow their dreams the educational system is not fulfilling its promise to young minds.
